Asian Martial Arts
Asian martial arts aren’t anything mystical or magical. They aren’t secret from westerns either, and you don’t need to change religions to learn them. They don’t all come from Japan and Kung Fu is not the only style. You won’t be able to catch bullets, fly threw the air, or break swords with your bare hands. Some people do break objects made from stone and wood, but only after years of training and conditioning. Sorry to disappoint you, but Asian martial arts aren’t much different than those you will find in other parts of the world. Sure they have something about them thanks to all the hype from movies and TV, but they’re all about continuing on with cultural practices, sports, and sometimes if you’re lucky self defense. Asia has a rich history with many styles of martial arts, but they aren’t the only ones to develop styles.
Every martial artist thinks their style is best, and you’re probably no different. You like your training and you don’t think you need any more than what you already have. Sure you could be happy training in one style for the rest of your life, but where is the fun in that. When you exchange ideas you fill in gaps you didn’t know were there until someone outside your group pointed them out. Just because someone else practices another style doesn’t make them wrong especially when you’re training for combat. Don’t limit yourself to one style, because the more techniques you know, the better off you will be in a fight.
There are so many Asian martial arts the list alone would take pages to cover, but you don’t have to learn them all, just be willing to share ideas. Don’t be closed- minded because you might find you have more things in common with students of another style then you think. Colonel Fairbairn who developed World War II combatives for the Allied powers studied many Asian martial arts and picked what he wanted for his style. What he came up with was a quick and easy to learn style that could be used by soldiers and civilians with great success. It was easy to learn and could be deadly if it needed to be, and it only took a little while to train. Train hard and always keep learning.
