Kempo Gloves

If you’re looking for Kempo gloves chances are if you’re in the United States you’re practicing some form of Karate and your school uses the term Kempo to cover multiple martial arts styles. In fact the word Kempo is like Kung Fu and is a general term for martial arts. Now if you’re wondering if there is a difference between Kempo and Kenpo, stop wondering because there isn’t one. The only difference is which language you use because the terms can be found in both Japanese and Chinese cultures.

Now if you know the history of Karate you know that it was heavily inspired by the Chinese before being taken on by Japan. If you go back even further thought Kempo, Kung Fu, or whatever you want to call it – it made its way from India. However, it did change over the centuries and the group that helped develop it was the Shaolin Monks. Most people think that martial arts came from the exercises the monks did to keep in shape. One story says that a very dedicated monk fought off several bandits using a simple style of fighting, and it inspired others to train. Exact details are unclear, but what is clear is a lot of work went into the Kempo you practice today.

Physically, the gloves have a leather back and suede leather palm with an open finger design that allows you to grab, and they also have a long wrist design. They’re very different than conventional boxing gloves and can be used in a number of martial arts. They’re good for training in combat sports, but don’t forget about self defense training. There are many styles of Kempo around the world today, but are they teaching you what you need to know to survive a street fight or military battle? Now if you have a good teacher who practices the traditional arts the answer is yes, but that isn’t always the case. The traditional martial arts were all about hitting hard and hitting first, and being practical. As martial artists we have to strive to get back to that pure form before movies and competitions changed everything. Competition is to prepare you for real combat, and films should only be entertainment. When you lace up your Kempo gloves make it mean something again.
