Karate Charm
If you have any kind of hobby or passion whether it’s martial arts, golfing, or your career, chances are there’s a cute little gift out there for you that some friend or family member will buy because they think you’ll like it. It doesn’t take long before you end up with plenty of t-shirts, desk accessories, and pieces of art that involve what you love. It’s nice that your friends and family are behind you, but it gets to be a bit much.
Sure you’re a proud golfer, soccer mom, or whatever – but there is such a thing as overkill. That is the case with the Karate charm; it’s basically a little charm for your keychain or around your neck and often has a figure doing a some kind of martial arts move. One website even said martial arts are for fun and have nothing to do with combat anymore. Well enough already! You take what you do seriously and martial arts are not supposed to be cute – they’re supposed to have to do with combat.
Real Karate is not what you see at the local strip mall, and it isn’t just something for children. Karate was born out of a need for a method of self defense that didn’t rely on weapons. It was for the common man and elite warrior, and it was all about killing and hurting your enemy. There’s no room for moves that weren’t effective in combat, and it was a practical style – turning the body into a weapon. Today Karate like so many other martial arts is a shadow of what it once was, and those who practice traditional Karate are looked on as thugs who like hurting people.
Well, enough already if you’re a martial artist who likes karate start taking your style back from those who have turned it into a children’s game. Sure it’s a fun sport, but take time out to teach real self defense moves and the difference between moves for tournaments and moves for a street fight. You can wear a cute little karate charm, but let it conceal the warrior who wears it. Don’t let others weaken your martial art. It only happens if you let it happen.
