European Martial Arts

Many people think all martial arts come from Japan. While the close combat warriors of Japan have done so much for self defense and sports they weren’t the only ones thinking of better ways to fight. The fact is there are many European martial arts, and although some are no longer used in battle and have become cultural fighting arts, they still teach us important lessons. Many people enjoy Greco-Roman wrestling and fencing which are great combat sports and will help strengthen your body for battle. The warriors of Europe have added a lot to our martial arts knowledge, and it would be foolish to neglect it.

With the creation of guns, war changed and many martial arts styles stopped being used over time. There was no room in the new armies for sword fighting that had been perfected and weapons like the pike were replaced by bayonets. War was changing and many didn’t think close combat would be as important. They were wrong though and over time leaders saw the need for their warriors to still train in hand to hand combat moves.

You can’t carry a sword around with you on your morning commute, but you can still use a few moves from European martial arts. Weapons training helps you build up your body and develop the right mindset for combat, and if someone does break into your home you know how to use those weapons displayed on your wall. The moves you learn in wrestling will give you a good idea of what it’s like to fight with a person in a street fight – but remember weapons or more attackers can change things fast so watch yourself. One of the differences between sports fighting and real combat is that anything can happen. You have to be ready to use moves that would get you thrown out of a sporting match.

Though martial arts from Europe might look different from those from Asia and other parts of the world, it doesn’t mean they don’t share common beliefs. It is all about hitting hard and hitting first and knowing not to stop until it is over. Many European styles share those beliefs, and it doesn’t matter if the sword is different or you’re using your knuckles instead of the edge of your hand – it’s all about results. In a real fight it doesn’t matter where your martial arts moves came from.
