Martial Arts Costume

If you take a good look at martial arts you will realize that there are plenty of men and women wearing martial arts costumes and there isn’t even a party going on. Sure it’s fun to dress up like a martial artist for a costume party or Halloween, and if you’re secure with yourself as a martial artist you don’t really care what people do. When you wear a costume you’re out to have fun and not trying to pass yourself off as a doctor, rock star, or whatever else. The problem is a lot of people are dressing up and are playing martial artists – pretending to teach self defense. These “instructors” are actually putting people in danger by telling them they’re learning how to fight when they’re only learning a game.

Now you might be offended right now because you had a good instructor growing up or you have a good man or woman teaching you right now. Maybe you’re one of the lucky ones who has a good teacher that knows what they’re talking about and separates combat sports training from their self defense training. They might have police or military experience, or they understand the true fundamentals of martial arts. Many martial arts styles were designed to be used as self defense, but over time they were adapted so they could be practiced as sports. That means all of the moves that could prove deadly or considered “fighting dirty” were removed. That’s a good thing if you want to stay safe in a friendly match, but in a street fight or on the battlefield you need to whatever you have to do to survive.

If you want real self defense training you have to watch out for an instructor in a martial arts costume. Find out where they received their training and what techniques they teach. Are they preparing you for a real fight or just the next tournament? There is nothing wrong with sport martial arts, and they will condition you for real fighting, but they fall short when it comes to keeping you safe. Don’t learn how to dance around in strange costumes – learn how to fight. There is nothing stopping a person from buying a black belt to teach classes and lie to people about self defense.
