Stretching for Martial Arts
Since everything can’t be controlled during training it’s up to you as the student to prevent injuries while practicing martial arts training. One of the ways that you can prevent injury is by keeping in shape. Running and weight lifting are great ways to keep in shape, and if you dedicate just a little time you can see some great results. You might not become a competitive runner or bodybuilder, but you will find that you get hurt less often and your recovery time from injury and exhaustion will decrease. Another method that shouldn’t be overlooked is warming up. Before you start a workout you can warm up your body with some simple exercises such as light jogging followed by stretching. Stretching for martial arts is probably the simplest and best way to stop you from getting hurt.
If you stretch out before you train you’ll get more out of your workout. You’ll be able to work hard and train for longer without pain. That means you’ll have the ability to learn more and build up strength and endurance. It seems silly when you really think about it, but a few minutes at the beginning of your workout you can save yourself hours of pain later and you’ll get more out of your limited workout time. Even the best athletes need time to get the blood flowing before they compete. Sure they can jump right in and probably perform as well, but they will feel it later just like everyone else. Before you start a workout take a few minutes to prepare – your body will thank you later.
Now stretching for martial arts is a great thing, and you should do it before any workout or match, but there are times when you shouldn’t stretch. If you’re in a self defense situation you can’t wait to make a move. Someone threatens you and asks you to step outside, and you’re surrounded by a crowd of rowdy drunks you don’t have time to stretch out. If you’re left with no choice but to fight – go all out as fast as possible. Knock them to the ground by any means necessary and keep hitting them. If they have friends and you find you’re outnumbered – run for it and knock down anyone along the way.
