It’s all very interesting if you’re into Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) or similar types of matches and there are plenty of websites to tell you all about what is going on with the sport. Sites like Youtube.com have thousands of mixed martial arts training clips and matches too in case you’ve missed anything. You know there’s plenty of information out there, but what about the basics? You don’t know a thing about mixed martial arts and it’s all your friends talk about. Maybe you live with combat sport fanatic and you want to know what they’re babbling about. You need a crash course.
Most people in the United States were introduced to mixed martial arts in the early 1990s. The UFC matches had few rules and allowed fighters to use both boxing and wrestling moves in an octagon shaped ring that was surrounded by a cage. The fights were more savage then boxing and soon became more popular. Fighters could both strike and grapple and all kinds of martial arts styles were used ranging from Karate to Tae Kwon Doe, to Muay Thai kickboxing. The Gracie family of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu fame organized the match after witnessing a simpler type of tournament in Thailand and their native Brazil. The Royce Gracie would dominate the competition in that first match, because his style had prepared him for that type of sports competition.
You can win a match by either pinning your opponent or getting them in a submission move and forcing them to “tap out,” because they can always throw in the towel. The fighting is intense and fighters can battle on the ground and standing. You will hear a lot of talk about grappling when mixed martial arts is brought up in conversation, but people are really just talking about wrestling. In fact this type of competition is basically a martial arts match where you can punch and wrestle with your opponent. The more martial arts you know, the more moves you know and that will improve your odds of winning. Once you learn what the terms mean you will realize things aren’t that complicated.
