No-holds-barred fighting or NHB fighting are the submission moves you do win Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC), and in self defense situations they can hurt your attacker very badly. Most Martial arts are practiced in a clean and safe environment, but as we all know the real world isn’t a safe or very clean place. There are individuals out there who can only be described as monsters, and they are determined to take everything from you, and they don’t care how good hearted you might be. You can be a victim, or you can be a survivor, and if you want to be the latter you need to know how to fight. When you’re in a life and death struggle NHB fighting can help you stay alive and take your attacker out of it.

If you look back through history many Martial arts were created to provide people with a way to protect themselves, but this core principal is absent in many modern Martial arts. Karate for example was designed for combat, but it became civilized and commercialized. Ferocious strikes and lethal techniques were removed so students wouldn’t be injured in competition, and there is less emphasis on students maintaining a combat mindset. Worst of all the exchange of ideas ceased when Martial artists stopped sharing techniques and started competing for students. Far too often present day Martial artist don’t understand the fundamentals of their chosen style.

When you’re fighting for your life tradition and protocol doesn’t matter; it is about being the one standing when the fight is over. That means if you perceive a threat don’t wait for a potential attacker to make their move. Create some space between you and them if you can, and don’t be too proud to run for help. If you’re left with no option but to fight don’t be afraid to hurt your attacker. If there is something to fight with like a brick, a rock, or a trash can use them. Learning how to properly throw a punch or an edge of hand is important, but there is no “wrong” if it helps you survive. If your do end up rolling around with and grappling with your attacker remember this is NHB fighting, so don’t worry about hurting them. Use all the most vicious moves you never use on your training partner and do everything full force.
