Sparring Equipment

Sparring equipment - an introduction. There are several things you can do to prepare yourself for actual hand-to-hand combat. While it isn't practical to fight to the death every week because of legal and ethical reasons you can still compete in a combat sport martial art. While most forms of martial arts today are sports not self defense like the traditional styles were they still provide students with an important first step in learning self defense.

By putting your hands on another person and learning to fight you are already learning the fundamentals. The problem with most combat sports is that they're created to be safe for both fighters that are participating in the match, and many of the moves that would kill or disable an attacker have been removed for that reason. Students need to learn that when they strike or grapple that they have to be unrelenting, and they have to be willing to hurt their attacker. One of the ways that can be done in a training environment is through the use of sparring gear.

Because you want to hurt attackers on the street you need to learn how to attack full force, but you don't want to injure your training partners at your martial arts school. That would cut short your learning, and would leave you short on friends very quickly. So when you're sparring you have two choices available to you. One is to go full contact and take the bruises and have some rules regarding what is off limits, like strikes to the face, or the second option is to use pads. The second option h as become very popular and many competition martial arts even require them to compete.

If you're going to spar with a classmate you need all the necessary safety gear which varies by sport. There are different kinds of martial arts head gear and what is acceptable in one style won't always be practical in another. Some mixed martial arts sparring equipment is useful in a number of martial arts because of the nature of the competitions. Some styles insist that athletes protect all vulnerable areas with pads and cover their hands and feet if they're striking. Hopefully, with all the sparring equipment all the moves can be done at full force and students gain a greater understanding of the fighting art. The problem is it is different hitting with pads.
