Martial Arts SchoolWhen entering a martial arts school one is taking part in centuries of tradition based on respect. Like any learning institution there are rules and a degree of respect is necessary. Regardless of whether a school teachers Korean, Chinese, Japanese or any other martial art there are some acts that will show proper respect no matter what environment a student visits. Like many social situations some rules are very basic. Try not to come late is one example. There is ritual at the beginning of classes and you will interrupt them if you come late. If you do arrive late wait quietly until you can join the class. Like any other learning situation be polite respectful and attentive. When visiting a school other then your regular school follow the lead of others and stick to the general rules. Having a learning environment free of distractions allows students to be more productive. Leave your problems and your stress at the door and relax and enjoy your workout. Without honor and respect a martial arts school would not be different then a fight club in an alley. The ritual in martial arts school is not religious based so no one is violating any religious beliefs by taking part in these rituals. Bowing is simply a sign of respect to teachers and fellow students. Glancing up while bowing is a sign of lack of trust and disrespectful. Like with work or any other school a student is expected to arrive on time dressed and ready to begin class. Uniforms should be clean and the student should look presentable with long hair tied back and jewelry removed for safety reasons. Most classes then have a warm up of some type. Many classes are divided between working out and teaching. Like with any lecture being quite and paying attention are a given and ask questions at the end. Once you begin your workout with your partner being respectful and safe. When working out with someone of a different gender respect the comfort levels of the other person, and make it clear if you're feeling uncomfortable. If you're having difficulties stop and ask a question of the teacher or lead student. Many moves and techniques are dangerous and if not done right can injury yourself or another student.
