Martial Arts Gear

Quality martial arts gear is not to be neglected if you want grapple in the octagon or fight it out on the mat at the Olympics. You know you have a long road ahead of you. You are talking about long hours of training and many hours spent doing things beside just techniques. You need to lift weights, run, and even swim to build up your body. Your gear includes everything from your gi to your heavy bag to your track suit. You can't neglect any area in your pursuit if victory. So whether your practicing Karate, Greco-Roman wrestling, or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu you need good gear.

Many martial arts require that you wear a gi in training though many grappling sports have begun to move away from the traditional dress. The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu kimono is very practical for martial arts, and is designed to stand up to the brutal ground fighting that is part of the sport. The first kimonos used in workouts were simply cut down regular kimonos from Japan, but in time they developed the Judogi we know today for practice and competition. The top portion of the two piece uniform is made from heavy material and fit loosely and also allows for gripping. The pants would be reinforced and have built-in belt besides the belt that displays rank which wrapped around the top portion of the gi and is worn in several styles besides Brazilian Jiu Jitsu including Judo and Karate.

There are literally dozens of brands to choose from when it comes to gear for your workout and tournaments. Rash guards that help sweat evaporate faster and make it more difficult to grapple an opponent in a match are very popular. There are also grappling shorts and other workout clothes designed especially for combat sports. Combat sports like fencing and kendo have their own protective gear, and those who practice Eskrima use a combination of protective gear from several sports.

There are many good sources for equipment online, and don't get caught up on specialty made items. A heavy bag made for boxing will work just fine for your Muay Thai and kick boxing training. There are a lot of great weight sets out there, but look for systems that help you build explosive energy. Keep hydrated and keep training hard because it doesn't matter how good you gear looks if you can make it happen out on the mat.
